Classroom Corner: Circle RoomThis month, we focused on a variety of themes, exploring the celebration of Chinese New Year, identifying feelings and expressing emotions, and creating art in celebration of Black History month. During the week of February 17th, as we learned all about how Lunar New Year is celebrated in China and all over the world, we held a mini Parade with Paper Dragons and created lanterns. The students utilized their fine motor skills in practicing cutting paper to make their lanterns, created their own currency, and practiced using tongs to pick up rice and fake Bao pastries in our sensory bin. Bao is a steamed dumpling that is a popular breakfast snack in China and Vietnam. It is made from moist, fluffy dough that is a little sweet, and is usually filled with savory ingredients, like pork, duck, and egg. As children grow, they will experience emotions and eventually learn how to manage them independently. We spent some time recognizing and identifying those emotions. We incorporate a lot of songs into our learning as it helps them connect with the subject in a fun, and sometimes silly way. February is also Black History Month. We discussed about Black Leaders and Inventors and created a BHM Name Plate. We read some books about Black Professionals, Artists and leaders, like Mae Jamison, Shirley Chisholm, and Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Big, Little One by Vashti Harrison, and Who Was Martin Luther King Jr.? by Lisbeth Kaiser were a few of the books we read this month.
